A quick update - Sept 20, 2019

Hello All,

Unfortunately, I did not have time to write this post until now, but it's never too late. :)

I miss everyone dearly, but here is a quick update on what we did during our last week and a last minute "mock" class photo.

Here's a bit of artwork that we did looking at cubes, angles, lines, and abstract creations.  The mural was inspired by Thank You X - a street artist from Los Angeles. 

And, as mentioned, here is a mock class photo as we did not get a chance to do an actual class photo together.  We do have two lovely students missing from the photo - Justin and Evelyn.  You were missed that day and I hope you are feeling much better now.  Thank you Mme Adeline for taking the photos for us.

Week one already behind us - Sept 5, 2019

It is hard to believe but one week of school is already under our belt.  Here's a quick snapshot of what we did this week.  We had a short week but did a few fun things to start off the school year.

To start with, this week, we did some quick democratic work and the students were able to offer their ideas on what would be good rules for the class (in addition to mine of course :)).  There were some really creative ideas for sure.

 

We also shared parts of our summer vacation adventures in a sharing circle and then we used play-doh.  Each student was given one container of play-doh with which they were supposed to create one object that represented one fun thing they did this summer.  They then used that to tell us about their creation and what it represented.  All this was done in French to help us take the rust off our oral French.  The creations were really awesome too.  I guess we are never too old to enjoy play-doh.  :)  Here are some of the pictures.  (Some sharing of play-doh also took place... )

We also created half-face portraits.  These were challenging to make as it involved fractions, proportions and they also needed to look like us.  Everyone did a fantastic job though.  Not all portraits are on the bulletin board yet.

In Math we did multiplication review using Kahoot as well as playing cards.  I have to say that the Grade 5s remembered a lot and the Grade 6s stood their ground too.  We also started our math topics with "Des machines d'entree-sortie".  This topic looks at patterns from a different angle.

In French we started writing in our Journals.  We also took some time this Friday to listen to Mme reading a book in French (it was Read a Book Day!).  The book is called "Le 14eme poisson rouge".  It is a fun read and many were very attentive and reactive (gasps, laughter) to the fun story.  Of course I used this time as an opportunity to check for understanding and vocabulary knowledge too.

We also started Religion where were talked about Prayer and how God calls us to know Him.  We watched the video from Father Rob Galea on Prayer with the Grade 6s.

Here's another one we did not watch, but is also a great one.

In Grade 6 Science we started our Air and Aerodynamics unit with a cool french video. There are many experts in the class and we had very animated and fun discussions about aviation.  Here's the video if anyone would like to watch it at home.  As we stopped it many times to talk and make sure we understood the we did not see the whole thing yet.

 
For Gym we did some free play.  Free play is very important for stimulating creativity, cooperation and teamwork.  Some of the students took to football (with some truly awesome discussions about the rules of the game), some students took to the swings and practiced both patience, negotiating skills and some very impressive physical challenges.  Others took the time to talk and walk, something we don't do enough of in our technology driven world.

Finally, we took some time to talk about what a Champion is, looked at profiles created by the wonderful adults/champions in the school and then we created our own profiles using Google tools.  These profiles will be forwarded to all the Champions in the school.

We did many other things too but there's just no space left to tell all about it :).

Although I must go, I do it with a heavy heart!  In the meantime, I will continue to support all the students and I will make sure that the excitement for learning continues on even once I am gone.  I will miss everyone unbelievably.
